This 7-day round-trip from Dublin includes the best sights of the country’s south, including Kilkenny, Killarney, and the Cliffs of Moher.

Leave Dublin in the early morning (we highly recommend at least one pre-night to experience the capital) and set out for County Kerry. Visit Birr Castle and its gardens, overnighting at Ennis in County Clare. Take a morning tour of the town, learning about its triumphs and tragedies dating back to medieval times. Then it’s on to Burren and the Cliffs of Moher, enjoying a one hour cruise to get the best view. Native bird sightings are a given as you explore the coast, with the distinct possibility of spotting a puffin.

The Ring of Kerry is one of Ireland’s most famous drives and with good reason, combining history and scenic landscapes. Visit the Skellig Experience, and Portmagee, a colourful fishing village that continues to thrive today. Let a visit to the Staigue Fort take you back to 400AD, and explore the streets of Sneem before going on to Kenmare. Fancy a cheeky drop? You’re about 200 years too late to sample Molly Gallivan’s famous bootleg whiskey, but you will visit her cottage and enjoy a glimpse of Irish life during this period.

Enjoy a seaside break at Kinsale, with a walking tour of the historic streets, then continue on to Cork, home to Cobh, the departure port of the Titanic’s fateful voyage. Still up for that tipple? Stop in at the Jameson Midleton Distillery for a tasting and short course in whiskey production. Finally, stop in at Killarney, home to one of the most famous castles in Ireland.

Enjoy the scenic drive back to Dublin via the Wicklow Mountains and Avoca (Ballykissangel fans, this stop’s for you). Your drop-off is in the late afternoon to early evening, so consider staying an extra night.

Day 1: Arrive in Dublin

Historic and full of character, Dublin is where you'll meet the group and begin your adventure. This evening is an opportunity to get to know your fellow travelers over a delicious welcome dinner.

Day 2: Dublin to Kildare and Ennis

After breakfast, you'll hit the road to our first stop: County Kildare, where you've an appointment with the Irish National Stud. After being treated to a private tour and the chance to explore the fascinating museum, you'll move on to the award-winning gardens of Birr Castle Demesne. Take some time to wander around the grounds and admire the awe-inspiring science and engineering that has been invested in creating such a unique residence. This evening, check into the hotel in Ennis, where you'll enjoy some free time to spend at our leisure.

Then, prepare to be amazed by the rugged natural beauty of the Cliffs of Moher. The keen-eyed among you - or perhaps just those who packed binoculars - may even spot a resident puffin or two. After an invigorating afternoon, you'll travel across the Shannon Estuary to Killarney: the gateway to the panoramic Ring of Kerry.

Day 4: Killarney to Ring of Kerry and Killarney

This morning, begin our journey around the awe-inspiring Ring of Kerry. The first stop of the day: the Skellig Experience, where you'll gain a fascinating insight into the lives of the early Christian monks that once broke bread at the Skellig Michael monastery. When you return to Killarney, the evening will be yours to relax and reflect on the day's adventures.

Day 5: Killarney to Releagh and Kinsale

This morning, make your way to Molly Gallivan's Cottage - which, at first glance, appears to be an unassuming farmhouse. But there's more to it than first meets the eye! More than 200 years ago, Mrs. Gallivan supported her seven children by brewing illicit whiskey - and her home was, in fact, a clandestine pub. Learn stories of the enterprising Mrs. Gallivan's antics before travelling onwards to the medieval town of Kinsale, where coastal views, cozy pubs and brightly coloured houses await you. The cobbled streets that curve around the pretty bay are just begging to be explored, so you'll enjoy a walking tour with a local guide. Bearings established, you'll be free to seek out the town's hidden treasures at your own pace before we head to our accommodation for the evening.

Hotel: Acton's Hotel Kinsale (4 Star Rating)

Acton's is the oldest hotel in Kinsale originally established in 1946. This hotel overlooks Kinsale Harbour and Yacht Club allowing you to wake up to the twinkling sound of yacht masts. Situated in the heart of Kinsale overlooking Kinsale Harbour and Marina only 20 minutes from Cork City the hotel is close to Desmond Castle, Charles Fort, James Fort and the world famous Old Head of Kinsale Golf Course. Day 6: Kinsale to Cobh and Waterford

This morning you'll move on to the charming waterfront town of Cobh. Interestingly, Cobh was the departure point for the last 123 passengers who boarded the Titanic - and you'll notice poignant markers of this as you make your way around. Later, you'll continue to Waterford. Dating back to Viking times, Waterford is Ireland's oldest city - with over 1,000 years' worth of history to explore. Gain a fascinating insight into how the city's famed crystal is made before we travel on to our accommodation and savour tonight's final meal with the group.

Faithlegg House Hotel and Golf Resort in Waterford is an 18th century mansion which has been beautifully restored to form the centre piece of a superb four star hotel and golf course. The history of Faithlegg dates back to 1177 with the house being built in 1783. Many of the rooms are named after previous owners of the house, each with their own unique story.

Waterford

Nestled in southeast Ireland, Waterford combines low farmland and sandy coastlines with rugged landscape typical of County Cork. The town is an ancient Viking settlement whose roots go back to the 8th century. Even today there is a medieval feel about Waterford with its ancient fortifications, 18th century cathedrals, and fine Georgian houses, particularly around The Mall, George's Street and O'Connell Street. While the town is charming, it regained world recognition with the re-opening of the crystal factory offering once again the famous, exquisite glassware of the town's name. Take a walking tour of Historic Waterford to get an understanding of Waterford's complex history. The 70-foot Reginald's Tower was built in the 11th century. Climb the stone spiral staircase for a great view of the city. The ruins of French Church are part of a Dominican monastery built in 1240 AD given to Huguenot refugees in the 17th century. The Theater Royal and City Hall are considered architectural masterpieces by John Roberts.

Waterford’s Fine Houses – full day tour

Leaving Waterford this morning we travel through the rich pastures of County Waterford and head for Lismore to visit Lismore Castle Gardens. The castle, which was originally built in 1185 is now the Irish home of the Duke of Devonshire. While Lismore Castle itself is not open to the public, the beautiful and lovingly maintained public gardens are, as is the west wing of the Castle which houses a wonderful contemporary art gallery. The gardens are said to be the oldest continually cultivated gardens in Ireland and they offer spectacular views of both Lismore Castle and the surrounding countryside of the Blackwater valley.

Leaving Lismore we visit nearby Cappoquin House, which is an eighteenth century mansion built on the site of an old Fitzgerald Castle overlooking the River Blackwater. It was designed by the Cork architect, Abraham Hargreave. The Keane family have lived here for the last 300 years. It is little changed from the handsome building completed in 1779. In the house are many reminders of the Afghan war of 1839 in which General Sir John Keane later created Lord Keane of Ghuznee and Cappoquin played an important role. The garden is on a south facing slope crowned with two huge arboretum rhododendrons and planted with unusual trees and flowering shrubs.

Returning to Waterford, we visit Curraghmore House, which is owned by the Marquis of Waterford and has been home to his ancestors since 1170. Some 2,500 acres of formal gardens, woodland and grazing fields make this the largest private demesne in Ireland and one of the finest places to visit in Ireland. The interior has exceptionally fine plasterwork and a guided tour of the main reception rooms of Curraghmore House can be arranged by prior appointment. This tour takes in some of the finest neo-classical rooms in Ireland which feature the magnificent plaster work of James Wyatt and grisaille panels by Peter de Gree. The superbly landscaped gardens beside Curraghmore House, incorporate a shell house, the interior of which was designed by Catherine, Countess of Tyrone, in 1754. May and June are the best months to appreciate azaleas, rhododendrons, through exceptionally fine trees may be enjoyed at any time.

Dublin enjoys one of the loveliest natural settings in Europe. Dublin attracts visitors from around the world with its old world charm and friendly atmosphere. Most of the architecture dates from the 18th century, when Dublin enjoyed great prominence and prosperity. Also of interest are stately Georgian houses which front Merrion Square. O'Connell Street is considered the commercial center of Dublin. Perhaps the most memorable feature of Dublin is the traditional pub, where visitors can enjoy conversation over fine Irish brew. The city also offers many fine parks, including St. Stephen's Green and Phoenix Park. National Gallery's renowned collection includes works by such famous masters as Rembrandt and Monet. Trinity College's Old Library is home to the most cherished treasure, the Book of Kells, a manuscript of the Gospels. Admire Christ Church Cathedral and St. Patrick's Cathedral. Enjoy the exhibits in impressive National Museum. Self-guided walking tours include Old City Trail, Georgian Heritage Trail and the Cultural Trail.

Founded in the 16th-century, Trinity College is Ireland's oldest university and holds the Book of Kells, a greatly treasured example of early Irish manuscript illumination. History lovers may opt to visit the nearby Treasury of the National Museum or EPIC - the interactive museum commemorating the emigration of 10 million Irish. For those interested in art, the National Gallery houses a superb collection.

Afterwards make a lunchtime pit stop at the Guinness Storehouse, where you learn how a pint of the world-famous Guinness is created.
